The world that they live is one where there are castes and 1 is the best one to live in and 8 is the worst. You can't even work your way up to higher castes. The only thing you can do is marry up. In the world in the book, it is a very sexist world. Favorite quotation: ''I want my dad to know that he is still part of my life." pg. 300
